With What You Have | 66
Five people, 665 square feet, one bathroom. Tricky business, because a double-booked bath makes for cranky people and lumpy mornings. Not the best of ways to begin the day. But, like many things in life, if you consider for a bit, a workable solution can often be found before you take off to extremes.
One boy came up with our solution while munching his cereal at breakfast one morning: "We should each have our own morning time slot for the bathroom," he said. My thoughts, exactly, only it was much better coming from him. And, coming from him, it seemed so original, like nobody ever, in the entirety of time had thought of this simple time management solution. Love.
Each boy chose his slot. The youngest boy & earliest riser chose 5:30 (so he could take a leisurely bath, then snuggle on the couch under a blanket before getting ready for school), the eldest took the 6:15, and the middle, sleep-loving boy, took the 6:30 (though he did lobby for 7:15, we thought that was a bit too close to his 7:30 departure time. good try, though) and we were on our way to more peaceful mornings.
I soon realized, however, that though boys could get to the bathroom (mostly) on time for their slot, they lost track of it once the door was closed. The pounding that ensued by the next boy in line wasn't so nice for anyone. One more tiny tweak: a bathroom clock.
It had to be small (small bathroom), it had to hang on the wall (small bathroom sans counter), and it had to be cute (hello). The best part? I already had just the right one, purchased years ago from Pottery Barn. Finding a vintage brass hook in an old ranch building to hang it from was icing on the cake.
