Beauty, Here

Dreaming and scheming from here, lately (and if I’m being honest, from the bed and the sofa, too, as I’ve work/rested my way through a recent late winter illness). Working one thing out, then another, steadily, and what feels slowly at times, making my way through projects big and small.

In this creative work, I’m always challenged, always amazed at what can come of collaboration and a shared desire for beauty and life lived simply and well.

And in the middle of it, there are these words:

“Whenever you are creating beauty around you, you are restoring your own soul.”  - Alice Walker

I stop about this, let my thoughts settle about this. Beauty, what we’re drawn to, what makes us come alive, it’s not for out there, for then, for later. It’s for now. It’s here. Already, here. Maybe in the grand; certainly in the simple.

Beauty is fresh scones, hot from the oven. (Or maybe it’s cake?)

It’s the rumpled linen napkin, left on the table following dinner

It’s the softness of late winter sunlight, gauzy through curtains

It’s muscled teenager hands rubbing your shoulders on their way by

Beauty is a collection of images that tell about you

It’s a book opened. And a book closed

It’s the sound of winter birds singing spring’s song

It’s water boiling in the kettle

Beauty is the etchings of laughter on the face of your love

It’s the front porch swept clean of freshly fallen snow

It’s a painting that makes your breath catch

It’s a needle, thread, and fabric that together become something new

Beauty is a wilted petal, fallen from a spring stem

It’s the sound of a girl’s laughter in a houseful of boys

It’s the color of jam in the jar

It’s hard work; it’s reward

Beauty is how we see

Just as much as it is what we do

Indeed, it restores the soul
