June's Letter

We found him way down there in the sea of capped and tasseled graduates waiting for the ceremony to begin; waved wildly so he could see us, too. All four of us there for him, (all four of us, and his sweet girlfriend, too) his people cheering him in the first major accomplishment of his adult life. And I couldn’t help but remember the boy who loved to draw cartoons, who loved to storyboard movie ideas, who loved to make film, who loved to write screenplays. I remembered his high school film teacher who, after reading a feature film screenplay he’d written, told him not to show it to anyone, the potential was that good. And there he was, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Film.

If that doesn’t make a mama catch her breath. If that doesn’t make her know, sure as the very blood running through her veins, that every sleepless night, every sacrifice, every worry and wonder of a mama’s heart was worth it. So very worth it.

Reading Lately

Homegoing - One of my intentions this year was to become more educated as a citizen, which lead to me join a bookclub for the first time in my life - Governerds with Sharon McMahon (I’ve learned so much). This is one of our book selections for this semester. One person who read it described it as “intense but excellent.” I have to agree. I’ve had to read it slowly, had to give the stories of cruelty, heartbreak, and enslavement space. I’m still turning the pages…

Eating Lately

Poolside Sesame Slaw - Let me just tell you that my husband’s reaction when he put the first bite into his mouth was a single word - Amazing. We’re slaw lovers over here, so when I saw this recipe for an Asian version, I immediately added the ingredients to my grocery list. I served it with chicken thighs marinated in the soy sauce/honey mixture she mentions, and the two together were just so good.
